The Moon Kingdom's Lost Heiress Chapter 1 The Night My Heart Was Torn Apart

Lyra's POV

The Moon Goddess was supposed to bless tonight.

Instead, she destroyed me.

I stood before the towering Black Moon Pack Hall, my trembling fingers smoothing the silver fabric of the dress my mother had sewn by hand before she died. It wasn't the finest dress among the unmated wolves gathered for the annual Moon Ceremony, but it was the only thing I had left of her.

"Tonight," she'd once whispered while brushing my hair, "the Moon Goddess will lead your mate to you. Never doubt her plan."

I had believed every word.

For twenty-one years, I dreamed of this moment. Every girl in the pack did. We imagined the first spark when our eyes met our fated mate's, the warmth of the bond wrapping around our souls, and the promise that we would never be alone again.

I clutched the small crescent moon pendant hanging around my neck.

"Please," I whispered to the glowing full moon above. "Let tonight be everything she promised."

Around me, laughter echoed through the courtyard. Young wolves chatted excitedly while elders smiled proudly. Musicians played soft melodies, and servants carried trays filled with food and wine.

Everyone looked happy.

Everyone except me.

As an orphan raised by the pack, I had learned long ago that happiness always seemed to belong to someone else.

"Lyra!"

I turned as my best friend, Ava, hurried toward me with a bright smile.

"You made it!" she exclaimed, pulling me into a hug. "I was worried you'd hide in your room."

"I almost did."

She laughed softly.

"Don't be nervous. What if your mate is handsome? Or rich? Or maybe even one of the Alpha's warriors?"

I forced a smile.

"What if he isn't?"

"Then you'll love him anyway."

I wished I shared her confidence.

A deep horn suddenly echoed across the courtyard.

Silence fell.

The crowd parted as warriors lined both sides of the stone pathway.

My heart skipped.

"The Alpha..."

Everyone bowed their heads.

Heavy footsteps approached.

I slowly lifted my eyes.

And then...

I saw him.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Dressed in a black ceremonial suit embroidered with silver wolves.

His dark hair moved gently in the night breeze, and his piercing blue eyes seemed capable of freezing the air itself.

Alpha Kael Blackthorne.

The most feared Alpha in the Northern Territories.

Every woman admired him.

Every warrior respected him.

Every enemy feared him.

The moment our eyes met...

My breath disappeared.

A powerful warmth exploded inside my chest.

My wolf surged forward with overwhelming excitement.

Mate...

The word echoed inside my mind like thunder.

My knees nearly gave out.

"No..."

It couldn't be.

The Alpha?

The Moon Goddess had chosen him?

Across the courtyard, Kael suddenly froze.

His sharp eyes widened for the briefest second.

I watched his jaw tighten.

His fists clenched.

He felt it too.

He was my mate.

Joy burst through me so quickly that tears blurred my vision.

The Moon Goddess hadn't forgotten me after all.

Slowly, I stepped forward.

One step.

Then another.

Every heartbeat filled me with hope.

Around us, whispers spread through the crowd.

"The Alpha found his mate..."

"Who is she?"

"It's Lyra..."

"The orphan?"

I ignored them.

Nothing mattered anymore.

Not the whispers.

Not the stares.

Only him.

When I finally stopped a few feet away, my hands shook.

"Alpha..." I whispered.

Kael stared at me with unreadable eyes.

For one beautiful second...

I imagined he would smile.

Instead...

His face turned cold.

Colder than winter.

Colder than death itself.

My wolf whimpered.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Kael stepped closer.

"So..."

His deep voice cut through the silence.

"The Moon Goddess has a cruel sense of humor."

The happiness inside me cracked.

"W-What?"

His eyes traveled over my simple dress with open disgust.

"You?"

Each word felt like a knife.

"My mate is an orphan?"

Gasps erupted from the crowd.

Heat flooded my face.

I lowered my head, unable to bear the hundreds of eyes fixed on me.

"I..." My voice shook. "I didn't choose this."

"No."

He laughed bitterly.

"But I can choose whether I accept it."

Fear crawled through my body.

"No..."

Please...

Don't say it.

Kael turned to face the entire pack.

His voice rang across the courtyard.

"I, Alpha Kael Blackthorne..."

Time seemed to stop.

"...reject Lyra Ashwood as my fated mate."

The world shattered.

Pain unlike anything I had ever imagined exploded through my soul.

It felt as though invisible claws ripped my heart into pieces.

My wolf screamed inside my mind.

I collapsed to my knees, unable to breathe.

Tears streamed uncontrollably down my face.

The sacred mate bond...

Rejected.

Broken.

Around me, the crowd erupted into whispers.

"I can't believe he rejected her."

"How humiliating..."

"The poor girl..."

I barely heard them.

My entire world had fallen apart.

Then...

A pair of expensive black heels stopped in front of me.

I looked up through blurred vision.

A breathtaking woman stood beside Kael, her arm wrapping possessively around his.

She smiled.

Not kindly.

Cruelly.

Triumph sparkled in her emerald eyes.

"You should know your place, orphan," she whispered so only I could hear. "An Alpha deserves a Luna worthy of standing beside him."

She leaned closer.

"And that will never be you."

My fingers curled into fists.

Before I could respond, Kael did something that destroyed the last piece of my heart.

He slipped his arm around her waist.

"My future Luna," he announced.

The crowd applauded.

Every clap echoed like another crack in my soul.

I realized then...

I wasn't just rejected.

I had been replaced.

As I struggled to stand, desperate to escape the humiliation, a sudden, unfamiliar voice echoed inside my mind.

Run, Lyra...

I froze.

That wasn't my wolf.

The voice came again, stronger this time.

Run now... because they're about to kill you.

The warning echoed through my head again, louder this time.

Run, Lyra... They're coming.

My pulse pounded in my ears.

I looked around wildly. The cheers for Alpha Kael and his chosen Luna continued as though I no longer existed. No one noticed the terror flooding my veins.

Then I saw them.

Three warriors had quietly stepped away from the celebrating crowd. Their eyes were fixed on me, their expressions hard and unreadable. One of them rested a hand on the hilt of the dagger strapped to his belt.

My wolf whimpered.

"They're not here to help us," she whispered inside my mind.

I staggered backward, my legs weak from the pain of the rejection.

Kael's gaze flickered toward me for the briefest moment. Our eyes met across the courtyard. For just a heartbeat, I thought I saw hesitation... perhaps even regret.

Then he looked away.

He turned his back on me.

The last thread of hope inside me snapped.

I spun around and ran.

Ignoring the cries behind me, I pushed through the crowd and sprinted toward the dark forest beyond the pack borders. Branches clawed at my arms, stones cut into my bare feet, but I didn't stop.

Behind me, a voice roared through the night.

"Don't let her escape!"

The sound of pounding footsteps exploded from the trees.

They were chasing me.
