Today was my coming-of-age ceremony, the day everyone gathered to witness the awakening of my inner wolf. But the holy water remained completely lifeless. Seeing this, my betrothed, Jobe, publicly tore our marriage contract in half. "I refuse to marry a lowborn, wolfless invalid!" His mother hypocritically knelt before me, using the mocking crowd to force me to take the blame for the broken engagement to protect their pack's honor. I refused to be their stepping stone and demanded they repay the thirty thousand gold coins they had embezzled from my dowry over the years. In a desperate rage to hide their theft, Jobe led his heavily armed guards to slaughter me in the middle of the market square. His heavy blade missed my throat but completely shattered my sacred resonance bracelet. A blinding white heat erupted, violently tearing my soul from my bones. I couldn't understand why a family that lived like royalty on my stolen gold would so viciously try to take my life just to silence me. When I finally opened my eyes, I was no longer that fragile, wolfless girl. I was trapped inside the massive, blood-soaked body of Alford Armstrong, the kingdom's most terrifying Alpha commander. And the Crown Prince was currently pressing his boot into my shattered leg, preparing to finish his assassination.

Rejected By My Mate, Reborn As The Alpha Commander Chapter 1

Citlali POV:

The sharp edge of the torn parchment sliced across my cheek, leaving a thin bead of crimson against my pale skin.

"I, Dolphus Patterson, newly appointed Royal Scholar and warrior of the Realm, formally sever my betrothal to Citlali Ortega!" Dolphus's voice roared through the grand ceremonial hall of the Ortega Estate, dripping with self-righteous disgust. "I refuse to bind my future, my bloodline, or my rank to a sickly, wolfless parasite!"

Three hundred nobles, Elders, and pack emissaries gasped in unison, followed by a ripple of cruel, mocking titters.

For seven years, ever since the fever that supposedly withered my connection to the Moon Goddess and left me "wolfless," I had played the part of the fragile, discarded heiress. None of these pompous aristocrats knew the truth: behind my coughing fits and delicate lace dresses lay the iron fist of the Gilded Vault, the wealthiest covert merchant network in the empire, and a dormant, primordial white wolf soul fire coiled deep within my veins. Dolphus's family had only survived their mounting debts because my gold quietly funded his academy tuition and his mother's lavish lifestyle.

Now, at my official eighteenth-year Recognition Ritual-the sacred ceremony meant to honor a young noble's coming of age-he was using my supposed disability as a stepping stone to elevate his own social prestige.

I stood before the sacred stone basin, my hands still wet from the ritual water that had failed to stir a beastly aura. I had deliberately suppressed my inner spirit, ensuring the water remained dead calm. Dolphus took that silence as his cue to stage this public execution of my pride.

Across the hall, on the raised guest dais, Issac Fitzgerald-the hot-tempered second son of the Defense Minister-kicked an oak footstool over with a vicious crash. "You ungrateful bastard!" Issac snarled, his grey-blue eyes blazing with feral Alpha fury as he gripped the hilt of his broadsword. His elder brother immediately lunged forward, throwing his weight against Issac's shoulders to pin him back before he caused a bloodbath.

I didn't blink. I didn't cry.

My fingers brushed against the Moon Goddess resonance stone bracelet resting coolly on my right wrist. Lowering my gaze, I let my eyelashes cast shadows over my eyes, letting my lip tremble in a masterclass of fabricated humiliation.

"Dolphus..." I whispered, projecting just enough breath to make my voice carry the pathetic quiver of a broken-hearted maiden. "After all my family has done for yours... you discard me like refuse before the Elders?"

"Your family gave me scraps, and you expect me to chain my Alpha pride to a cripple?" Dolphus sneered, stepping closer. He tossed the remaining shreds of the parchment onto the stone floor, grinding them beneath the heel of his polished leather boot. "Look at you. You don't even have a wolf to answer the moon. You are an embarrassment to the Ortega bloodline."

Beside the altar, Dolphus's mother, Martha Patterson, dabbed at her dry eyes with a silk handkerchief, putting on a show of maternal sorrow for the gossiping matrons nearby. "Forgive my son, Citlali dear," Martha purred loudly enough for the entire gallery to hear. "A rising star cannot be anchored to an anchor of lead. Surely you understand a mother's duty to her son's greatness."

The gallery murmured in vicious agreement. Cruel smirks flashed behind silk fans.

Dolphus took another arrogant step forward, leaning down to hiss in my ear, "Take your pathetic tears back to your bedchamber, Citlali. You're lucky I didn't throw you out into the rogue lands." He shoved my shoulder with callous force, aiming to send me sprawling onto the stone floor to complete my public degradation.

I allowed my body to yield to the momentum, falling backward with theatrical frailty. My loyal maid, Bessie, rushed forward with a terrified cry, catching me before my head hit the floor. The resonance stone bracelet on my wrist clicked sharply against Bessie's silver belt buckle, the ancient gems flashing with a faint, imperceptible silver pulse.

"Lady Citlali!" Bessie sobbed, shielding me with her own body as she glared murder at Dolphus. "You will answer to the Goddess for this dishonor!"

"The Goddess doesn't care for empty vessels," Dolphus scoffed, turning on his heel to bask in the cheers of his sycophantic peers.

Hidden behind a veil of dark hair, the trembling curve of my mouth hardened into a razor-sharp, lethal smirk.

Celebrate while you can, Dolphus, I thought coldly. Because when I demand what you owe, you'll beg for the mercy of a quick death.

Bessie helped me to my feet, her hands shaking as she guided me away from the sneering crowd and out through the hall's side corridor.

We had barely taken ten steps into the quiet, torchlit hallway when the heavy rustle of silk echoed ahead. Martha, flanked by two stern-faced Ortega clan elders, blocked the exit with a predatory gleam in her eyes.
