Very few people know Seon Rain, but everyone knows Myo Mi-Sun—the stage name she uses as a superstar actress, who has stolen the heart of the nation by playing the sweet-hearted girl next door. But fame can bring unwanted attention, and when Rain’s apartment burns down, her manager decides to hire a bodyguard. Kita Yasuhiro is a highly-trained bodyguard with a strict code of honor. But little as Kita wants to deal with a bratty young woman, he has no choice but to take this job. Their meeting becomes exciting when Rain trips and almost falls down the stairs, Kita catching her just in time. Tall, handsome, well-dressed . . . To Rain, it is one of those moments that she has played out on television so many times over the years. Out of habit, she puckers her lips, readying for a kiss. The man gives her a look of disgust and leans back, dropping her on her rear. Rain screams in frustration! Catching Rain is created by Danae Ayusso, an EGlobal Creative Publishing signed author.

Chapter 1 No.1

Seoul, Korea

Chairman Hu’s Residence

“Once again, RomCom actress Myo Mi-Sun is in the spotlight, but not because of her single-niche acting. Rather, it’s for her lack of luck again,” the reporter beamed with a chuckle.

Behind them on the screen was a picture of the actress they were reporting on.

It wasn’t a flattering photo in the least.

The young woman was stuffing her face with Japchae between takes two years ago for Love Without Strings. It was the first time in nearly twenty-hours that Myo Mi-Sun had gotten a chance to eat, and someone snapped a picture of her with noodles hanging out of her mouth.

“Can’t a girl eat in private?!” Rain shrieked before changing the channel.

That photo haunted her for two years, and now it was back.

“Fire and Heartache, sounds like it should be the name of Myo Mi-Sun’s next straight to television dramedy-”

The channel changed again.

“First stood up at the altar on nationwide television. Then legal action was taken against the former television star when production was halted on the movie she was headlining. And now fire? What is next for Myo Mi-Sun?” the amused man asked before the television clicked off.

“Ugh!” Rain yelled in frustration, throwing her hands in the air, accidentally hurling the remote control at the television in the process.

Her eyes widened and mouth fell open.

The remote control hit the center of the large screen television where it embedded before sparks exploded from the high priced electronic and it started smoking.

“Oh no, no, no!” she gasped. “Cousin! Cousin!” she cried out, panicking.

Fire wasn’t something she handled well.

In fact, she didn’t handle most types of crisis rationally.

Hu Dae-Ho came rushing into the living room to see what had his cousin distraught this time.

“What did you do to the television?!” he shrieked, hurrying over and started fanning the back where smoke was coming from.

And apparently what neither of the twenty-four year olds realized was when there’s smoke, there’s fire.

Flames started to climb from the back of the television the more the young man blew on them in an attempt to put them out.

“Uncle!” Rain cried out.

Hu Jae joined them with a guest then groaned, shaking his head, pinching the bridge of his nose in an attempt to keep the impending migraine this was going to cause away.

It was of little use.

Of all the times for the Fire Inspector to come by to discuss the fire at Myo Mi-Sun’s residence, it would have to be when his son and niece were unintentionally catching his house on fire.

Why wouldn’t it have been?

Fire Inspector Bae Kwan’s eyes widened then instincts kicked in and he hurried into the living room. “Get a fire extinguisher!” he barked out as he unplugged the television.

Jae handed him the fire extinguisher he pulled from the front closest then stood back while the man put the fire out. “I’m scared to ask,” he said, looking to his son.

Dae-Ho pointed to his cousin. “Don’t look at me. I’m as much a victim to this travesty as the television is,” he complained. “We just got that one!”

Rain groaned, throwing herself back on the couch. “I didn’t mean to, Uncle. The remote flew out of my hand and it snowballed from there. I’m a victim of arson profiling,” she argued. “Who is that?” she asked as more of an afterthought when the fire was extinguished.

Jae looked to the ceiling and said a silent prayer for strength and guidance. “This is Fire Inspector Bae Kwan,” he introduced.

Her eyes widened before she buried her face in her hands. “Oh no. No. No. No!”

Dae-Ho chuckled. “Cousin, your karma is horribly out-of-whack,” he teased. “If it wasn’t for bad luck, you’d have no luck at all.”

Rain got to her feet then bowed. “I am so sorry, Inspector. This is not what it looks like. I swear it isn’t. I accidentally hit the television with the remote control, and… Oh no, no, no,” she stammered, fanning herself to keep the tears flooding her eyes from falling.

Inspector Bae Kwan looked from her to the others and back again; he didn’t know what to make of this.

Like most in their country, he knew who Myo Mi-Sun was and had watched her grow up on television before venturing into movies. When she was stood up at the altar by her fiancé in a televised event, he and the rest of the nation felt heartbreak with her.

There was something innocent about Myo Mi-Sun; she was the girl next door that you had a crush on and she always had a smile on her face, and the nation loved it.

The Inspector had to pull rank to in order to be the one to talk to Myo Mi-Sun that day. He needed to tell her what they discovered when it pertained to the arson investigation. And if he were bold enough to ask, to get an autograph. He was a huge fan, just like the next guy at the station. They were all trying to sway the Chief to allow them to be the one to bring the update on the investigation to the victim. But Bae Kwan pulled rank to have that honor.

Public opinion was that Myo Mi-Sun was typecast as the clumsy, innocent and endearing hopeless romantic that was a magnet for disaster, since that was what she beautifully played on television and in movies. But Inspector Bae Kwan now had a sneaking suspicion it wasn’t typecasting; it was exactly how she was and unable to play anything but herself.

“Please don’t cry,” Inspector Bae Kwan pleaded. “As questionable as this looks with the current situation with your residence in Buam-dong, I understand that the two aren’t related. Please, Myo Mi-Sun, sit. There are some things I need to go over with you.”

Rain forced a smile, it seemed so effortless coming from her, and she bowed before sitting. “Thank you for understanding, Inspector. What did you find out about my home?”

Jae motioned for the Inspector to take a seat so he did.

“It was arson,” Inspector Bae Kwan reluctantly said.

Rain gasped. “No! Who would do such a thing?!” she asked, looking from the Inspector to Jae. “Uncle, who would do that? People were hurt in that fire!”

Jae shook his head; this, he feared, confirmed his suspicions. “How do you know it was arson?” he asked.

“The accelerant used initially pointed the investigation that way. Confirmation, in my opinion, was the items that were in the residence that weren’t recovered. According to the list Myo Mi-Sun provided, that you provided,” Inspector Bae Kwan instantly corrected, blushing when his eyes met Rain’s, “for the investigation and insurance. Not all of them were accounted for in the remains,” he explained. “Personal items, the awards that wouldn’t have burned up so easily, they were missing. Because of those reasons, the cause of the fire has been deemed arson.”

“It wasn’t electrical like they thought?” she asked; that’s what Uncle had told her it most likely was.

Inspector Bae Kwan shook his head. “No. An accelerant was used that was alcohol based. A few splashes on some textiles, on the furniture specifically, was more than enough to create a raging fire that swept through the residence before the station could get there. The dwelling was a complete loss. I’m sorry, Myo Mi-Sun.”

Rain nodded, trying to keep from screaming in frustration; nearly everything she owned was in there. “I’m sorry that your men were injured putting out the fire,” she humbly said with a bow.

“No, that is their job. There is always a risk,” the Inspector promised her. “They are okay and back at the station; it was just smoke inhalation. But if you want to stop by and say thank you personally the guys would love that. They, we, are all really big fans of your work.”

Again, a smile was on her face as she got to her feet. “Of course. I wanted to stop by and say thank you. But Uncle warned it could be construed as a conflict of interest or that I was trying to use my fame to sway the investigation in my favor,” Rain said. “Uncle, will you give Inspector Bae Kwan your business card before he goes? Please let Uncle know when everyone will be at the station and I will visit and give my thanks in person. If you’ll excuse me, I need to rest. This news wasn’t what I was expecting today,” she said with a bow.

Inspector Bae Kwan got to his feet and bowed in return then watched her hurry from the room and up the stairs.

Jae motioned for his son to go after her; Dae-Ho was the only one that could reach his cousin most of the time when she was on the verge of losing it.

“I will show you out,” Jae said, motioning towards the entryway. “What else was in the report that we haven’t seen?” he asked.

Inspector Bae Kwan walked with him. “It will be released to you once it is officially signed off on.”

“What is your professional opinion?” Jae pressed.

“With arsons like this, it’s personal,” the Inspector said, keeping his voice down. “The items taken were personal in nature, not something with a monetary value to anyone outside of collectors that require proof of authenticity. Their only real value was sentimental for the one that won them. Myo Mi-Sun wasn’t supposed to be home, was she?” he asked, dread flooding him at the thought of the beautiful young woman being lost in the fire.

Jae shook his head. “No. She was preparing to put the residence on the market to sell. She wanted to travel once the film she’s shooting is wrapped. See Europe or America for a few months. Dae-Ho, my son, is her personal assistant and are never apart. Because she was preparing to sell, his stuff and some of her more cherished items were brought to my home; they each have a room here.”

Inspector Bae Kwan nodded. “That’s right. You raised her after her parents died?”

“My sister and her husband,” Jae confirmed. “My son and niece are the only family I have left, and I will not allow them to be taken from me.” He offered the Inspector his business card. “Per her wishes, call when they are ready for a visit and I will make sure it is scheduled. Keep it need to know with very little prep for those outside of the station for security purposes. In return, I would like to see the report as soon as possible, it being marked as official or not.”

Inspector Bae Kwan took the card then bowed. “You will have it tomorrow.”

Once the door closed behind him, Hu Jae looked up the stairs his niece and son disappeared up, listening to make sure they were preoccupied in Rain’s room, before he headed to his office to make some calls.

Jae already lost his baby sister, and he wasn’t about to lose her little girl now.

It was only a matter of time before Jeoseung-saja came for Seon Rain again, that was how her life was seemingly set out to be, but Jae wouldn’t let her go without a fight.
