Chapter 1 1

Emmaline’s POV.

“Your highness, I completely disagree with you on that.” My maid pauses and stares at me through the mirror. There’s a look of concern on her face, which I cherish, but most importantly, as she continues, I can tell she means every word. “I’m part of the people, and I know that there’s no one better to rule over this land than you and your sister.”

I do not know how to agree with her. “I’ve been absent from anything that has to do with leadership for many years.”

“Only to learn how this world really works, isn’t that the reason?” She resists, not wanting me to look down on myself at all. If I were Evelyn, my sister, I’d be purring at her words, but I’m the cold one who likes to reveal an emotionless expression. All through my training, I learned how to conceal myself from any emotions because that’s how I can think calculatively and act accordingly in any factual decision.

“Maybe you’re right.” My gaze remains fixated on hers.

She laughs out of the blue. “I can’t be more happy that you’re about to be coronated along with your sister, Mistress Evelyn. I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Is it those men in the court? Those arrogant things who don’t even have dignity or show it at all.” She sounds like she despises all the men in the throne room.

My lips spread into a small smile, although concealed because I’m staring at her with dead eyes. “Well, thanks for giving your opinion, Mia. Now, we should hurry.”

“Yes, your highness. I cannot wait too.” She sounds thrilled.

Internally, I’m laughing at her girlish behaviour when, in fact, she is an adult.

My twin sister, Evelyn, and I were born into a fairly balanced world. I won’t say that there’s peace, but to some extent, everything isn’t as damaged as Uncle Chester and Aunty Olivia used to tell us. In this new world that I’m told my fathers and mother built, all creatures are allowed to roam in the same land together as long as the treaty between us is respected.

Trust me, I see the hatred. For many years, Evelyn and I may be distanced from people, sent away to a field where the only thing you wake up to is the rising sunlight and you sleep with the moon high in the sky. I remember always standing at the pouch, watching as the land spread into the distance.

There was no one else to speak to except our dads. At least, Daddy Kyle is still fun, but Daddy Kieran and Kade are like potatoes that you’re trying to use your fingers to dig into just to read their insides.

It was all grass on the field, divisions of lakes inside the woods, and, in the distance, clouds floating atop the mountains. They look so far away, as though in that distance you would see the freedom you actually deserve.

They never told us why we were brought there to be trained, but if there’s anything I know, it’s that mom decided that. Fine, she’s a powerful witch who helped conquer the darkness in this world, but in the end, was the darkness really quenched?

As long as there is light, there is pitch. That, she should have known better.

The door opens, and my eyes divert to it through the reflection from the mirror. “Pappy.” I call at daddy Kyle, and he flashes a wide smile at me.

He’s always been the playful one since I was a kid.

“Leave us.” I say to Mia, who bows lightly and walks outside with her back.

As Daddy Kyle enters, he comes to take a seat on the couch. I pack my jet-dark blonde hair to the front, letting it slide down my brest and reach my navel. Yes, my hair is that long, as is Evelyn’s.

“Daddy Kyle, you are here.” I say and turn the wheel of the chair to face him.

He waves off his hand. “Oh, you can drop the I am a tough girl who doesn’t need saving act. I’m your father, aren’t I? I know when you’re troubled, and that’s why I’ve come here. You are allowed to be weak before me. I’m only certain you’d come back stronger.” But I disagree with that. I don’t need to come back stronger. I can remain stronger.

I roll my eyes at him and stand up to hug him. After, I retain my seat and stare at my reflection. My silver cerulean eyes look dead, and my face is plain, revealing no hint of emotion.

“What are you worried about?”

I cut my eyes at Daddy Kyle. “I’m to be coronated as an Alpha tonight with my twin sister, Daddy Kyle. There’s nothing like being worried.”

“I have more experience than you, kid. I know you’re worried. Why else are you alone here and not with Evelyn?”

“I’m making my hair.”

“Which you don’t usually do. This isn’t you. You are fierce, cold, calculating, preserved, smart, and so much more. You and your sister are blessed with different characters that come from your fathers, but a bigger trait comes from your mother, which is resilience and persistency. You both are predators who can be so patient, awaiting what they really want, just like your mother, Kaya. You’re both so blessed that you have the partial personalities of Kade’s and Kieran’s, and Evelyn has the partial personalities of Kieran’s and mine. Now, tell me, what is it?”

Daddy Kyle is always right. He just knows how to read through me, and he’s also right that I can open up to him. I sigh. “Before our existence, you used to tell us how the world was so dark. You told us how everything was in chaos and that you weren’t the person that you are now. You’re cruel, sadistic, bad, and everything like that, but Mother changed you. You indeed told us everything.”

“And I remember how much you and Evelyn hated us so much then that we tortured your mother too much. I know. We honestly don’t deserve her. And that’s why every day, every hour, every minute, and every second is put into correcting our mistakes.” He comments.

I nod my head with a murmur. “Yes, that, and I used to have so much hope about my mother until I came of age. She locked us away for so many years on that field, away from people, and we are back here, in our rightful place, and no one even knows us.” As I speak, my brows come to knit, my nose squeezing a bit, and the skin of my forehead creasing lightly at the thought, and the confusion of why she did what she did.

“I don’t know, but I don’t want to be close to mom anymore. I did once, and she took away our freedom. If we never showed the ability of an Alpha, I am pretty sure we’d remain locked away and not be crowned today as the new rulers of this noble, label-less land that has always accepted anyone who comes into it. Fine, she tried to save the world, but it’s really not safe. I think she’s just scared.”

“And isn’t it okay to be scared? But controlling the scariness—isn’t that what makes you strong? Your mother did that. She is doing that.” He disagrees with me.

I huff and look away. “Come here, baby girl.”

I come to sit next to him, and he grabs both my hands. “Kaya did everything that we couldn’t do, and today, I’ll tell you what you don’t know. You and your sister are to rule this land now, you should know better.”

And with that, he begins.
