The Reborn Duke's Hated Bride Chapter 1 The Bride They Buried Alive

The man I killed was standing at the altar, waiting to marry me.

I knew this because I had watched him die. I had felt the warmth leave his body. I had seen the light fade from those pale blue eyes that once promised me forever.

And now, five years later, on the morning of what should have been my execution, he was standing there in a black silk suit, alive and breathing and smiling at me like no time had passed at all.

My hands began to tremble. The heavy iron shackles around my wrists clanked softly, the sound echoing through the cathedral like a death knell.

"You look as though you have seen a ghost, my love," Duke Alaric Blackthorn said, his voice carrying the same honeyed cruelty I had spent five years trying to forget. "Whatever is the matter?"

The guards flanking me tightened their grip on my arms. Somewhere behind me, I heard the murmur of the gathered nobles, their whispers cutting through the incense-thick air like knives.

But I could not look away from him. The man I had loved. The man I had been promised to since birth. The man whose blood still stained my memories.

Alaric descended from the altar, his polished boots clicking against the marble floor. Each step brought him closer, and with each step, the hatred in my chest burned brighter.

"You seem confused," he said, stopping directly before me. He reached out and traced the iron collar around my neck, a mockery of the wedding choker he had once given me. "Allow me to remind you. Today, you pay for your crimes."

I lifted my chin, refusing to cower. "I paid for my crimes the day I married you."

Something flickered in his eyes. Rage. And beneath it, something darker. Something that looked almost like fear.

"The King has decreed," Alaric said, his voice dropping low enough that only I could hear, "that you will die today. But not before you watch everything you love burn to ashes. Just as I watched you destroy everything I loved."

I wanted to laugh. I wanted to scream. I wanted to wrap my hands around his throat and finish what I had started five years ago.

Instead, I smiled.

"Then you should know, husband," I whispered, "that I have not loved anything since the day I drove that knife into your heart. You should know that killing me will give me peace. And that, more than anything, terrifies you."

His face went white.

And then, from the back of the cathedral, a voice I had never heard before rang out like thunder.

"Release her."

Every head turned.

Every breath stopped.

Because walking through the heavy wooden doors, flanked by a dozen armed guards in the colors of a kingdom that had no business being here, was a man whose name made even the bravest nobles tremble.

Duke Dorian Ravenscroft.

The Rebel Duke.

The man I had been sold to at birth, then stolen from, then forgotten.

And he was staring at me like I was the only thing in the world that mattered.

The cathedral erupted into chaos.

Nobles who moments before had been enjoying my humiliation now scattered like roaches, their fine silks rustling as they rushed to make way for the Duke's guards. Alaric's hand went to the sword at his hip, but he did not draw it. Even he, the most powerful man in the northern provinces, knew better than to challenge the man who had single handedly crushed three armies and carved a duchy out of blood and bone.

Dorian Ravenscroft was not just a noble. He was a legend whispered in fear around campfires and castle hearths. A commoner's son who had risen through the ranks of the military like a blade through flesh, earning his title through slaughter and strategy. It was said he had never lost a battle. It was said he had never smiled. It was said that the woman he loved had been taken from him, and that he had spent every day since searching for her with the patience of a predator and the rage of a man who had nothing left to lose.

Those rumors, I realized with a cold, sinking horror, were about me.

The Duke stopped at the foot of the altar steps, his dark eyes sweeping over me with an intensity that made my skin prickle. He was taller than Alaric, broader in the shoulders, his black hair streaked with premature silver at the temples. His face was all sharp angles and hard planes, the kind of face sculptors carved and painters immortalized. But it was his eyes that held me captive. They were the color of aged whiskey, warm and terrifying, and they looked at me as though they could see every secret I had ever kept.

"Dorian," Alaric said, his voice tight. "This is a lawful execution. The King himself sanctioned it. You have no authority here."

Dorian did not even look at him. His gaze remained fixed on me.

"I have every authority," he said, his voice low and rough, like stones grinding together. "Because this woman is my wife."

The words hit me like a physical blow.

I had known, of course. I had known since I was old enough to understand the contract signed on the day of my birth. I had been promised to Dorian Ravenscroft before I could walk, before I could talk, before I could choose. But that contract had been broken when Alaric's father conquered my homeland and claimed me as spoils of war. The papers had been torn. The engagement annulled. I had been given to Alaric like a prize, a trophy, a thing to be owned and used and discarded.

I had thought Dorian had forgotten me.

I had thought he had moved on.

I had been wrong.

"She is a convicted murderer," Alaric spat. "She killed my brother. She tried to kill me. She is a traitor to the crown."

"She is my bride," Dorian said, and his voice held a finality that made the stones themselves seem to shudder. "And I have come to collect what is mine."

He ascended the steps, his guards fanning out to create a barrier between us and the gathered crowd. When he reached me, he did not speak. He simply looked at me, those whiskey eyes tracing every bruise on my face, every scar on my exposed skin, the chains that bound my wrists and ankles.

And then, with a gentleness that seemed impossible for a man of his reputation, he reached out and brushed a strand of matted hair from my cheek.

"I have been looking for you," he said softly, his voice meant only for my ears, "for five years."

My throat tightened. My eyes burned. I did not know whether to weep or to run.

"I do not need saving," I managed to whisper.

Dorian's lips curved into something that was not quite a smile. It was sharper. Hungrier. "I know," he murmured. "But you are going to let me save you anyway. Because we have a debt to settle, you and I. And I do not intend to let you die before you pay it."

Before I could ask what he meant, he turned to face the crowd, his hand closing around mine with a grip that brooked no argument.

"The execution is canceled," he announced, his voice carrying to every corner of the cathedral. "By order of the King, who has been informed of certain truths regarding this woman's so called crimes. Duke Blackthorn, you will release her into my custody immediately, or I will consider your refusal an act of war."

Alaric's face twisted with rage. His hand tightened on his sword. For a moment, I thought he would fight. I almost wanted him to. The thought of bloodshed, of violence, of anything that would shatter this nightmare of a wedding, was almost a relief.

But then Alaric looked at the guards surrounding us, at the sheer number of swords pointed in his direction, and he lowered his hand.

"This is not over," he hissed at me. "You will pay for what you did. I will make sure of it."

I met his gaze, and for the first time since I had been dragged into this cathedral, I felt something other than despair.

I felt hope.

"I am counting on it," I said.

And then Dorian was pulling me away, his hand warm around mine, his guards closing ranks around us like a shield. We walked through the cathedral doors and into the blinding morning light, and I did not look back.

I should have.

Because if I had, I would have seen Alaric pull a small black vial from his pocket.

I would have seen him press it to his lips.

I would have seen his eyes turn completely black.

And I would have known, with absolute certainty, that this was only the beginning.
