A bleeding stranger crosses the old stone cairn at midnight, grips my wrist, and my silent inner wolf howls for the first time in my life. Cemal swears we are fated mates. I can smell the lie on his skin, but my pack is dying, my Alpha bloodline is failing, and a rogue at my border is the only wolf who might save us. For five years I have faked my scent with wolfsbane herbs, hiding the truth that the Kırkkaya Luna line is breaking. Now the rival Çamlıca Pack offers an alliance I cannot refuse, and the wolf who claims me is the one who could destroy me. I must decide whether to reject the only bond that ever woke my wolf, or walk into it knowing it was built as a weapon. Place and Time: The Kırkkaya Pack's pine-forest territory in Turkey's Black Sea highlands, 1923.

The Wolf She Silenced Chapter 1 The Stranger at the Cairn

The smell of blood reached me before I saw him.

I was on the northern ridge where the pines thin out and the old stone cairn leans against the sky. Midnight had passed an hour ago. I came up here every third night to breathe air that did not smell of wolfsbane tea and pack politics, to stand at the border and pretend my wolf was only sleeping.

Then the wind turned and brought me copper and salt and something beneath it, warm and animal and wrong.

I found him at the base of the cairn with one hand pressed to his side and the other gripping the lowest stone. Black hair, thick and wet at the temples. A coat dark with more than rain. When he lifted his head, his eyes caught the moonlight, warm brown, half closed, and fixed on me with a calm that made no sense for a man bleeding into the moss.

"You're on Kırkkaya land," I said. "Rogues don't cross the cairn."

"I know." His voice came out scraped raw. "I was hoping someone would come."

I should have howled for the border patrol. Instead I crouched beside him and pulled his hand away from his side. The wound ran from his ribs to his hip, and it had the pale shine of silver burn at the edges. Someone had tried to gut him with a hunter's blade.

"Who did this?"

"Men with lanterns." He said it lightly, like a joke he was too tired to finish. "They don't like my kind down on the coast."

I should have left him. I want to be clear about that, because everything that came after was a choice, and I made it there, kneeling in the cold moss. I could smell the lie on him already. It sat under the blood like a stone under a shallow stream, not visible, but there, changing the shape of the water.

Then he reached out and closed his hand around my wrist.

The world went white.

I have spent five years pretending. Five years of wolfsbane in my tea and wolfsbane oil on my skin, five years of standing in the council circle with my chin up while the elders talked about the Luna line and looked at me the way you look at a chair with a broken leg. Five years of silence where my wolf should have been, a hollow place behind my ribs I had learned to carry the way you carry a stone in your shoe.

When his fingers touched my wrist, something in that hollow howled.

It was not a sound. It was a rising, a pulling, a great dark shape turning over in its sleep and opening one green eye. My skin went hot from the inside. My heart slammed once, twice, then settled into a rhythm that was not quite mine, as if another heart had joined it.

I tore my hand free and stumbled back. The night smelled suddenly of everything at once, the pine resin and the wet stone and the blood and him, him most of all, a scent like woodsmoke and rain and something I had no name for.

"What did you do?" My voice cracked.

"I felt it too." He pushed himself up against the cairn, wincing. "I came looking for the Kırkkaya Luna. I did not expect her to be standing at the border in the middle of the night."

"Answer the question."

"I did nothing. The bond did it." He looked at me plain as a man reading the weather. "You are my mate."

I laughed. It came out ugly. "You're bleeding on a rock and you want to tell me about fate."

"I want to tell you the truth. Whether you believe it is your business."

He shifted his weight and the wound pulled and he made a small sound he tried to swallow. Blood ran over his knuckles.

"Take off your coat," I said.

He raised an eyebrow. "That's forward."

"Take it off before you bleed out on a boundary marker."

He laughed, low and rough, and did as I told him. Under the coat his shirt was dark and clinging, and under the shirt was a body built like the men who worked the lower docks, scarred along one flank. I pulled my water flask and the roll of clean linen I kept for my own small cuts and knelt in front of him.

"This will hurt."

"I hope so. I was starting to worry I'd gone numb."

I pressed the linen to the wound and he breathed in through his teeth. His hand came up and closed over mine, not to stop me, only to hold on. The heat of his palm went through my knuckles. The hollow place behind my ribs turned over again, and this time I felt the shape of it, a wolf's shape, a wolf's hunger.

"You smell like wolfsbane," he said quietly.

"It keeps the ticks off."

"It keeps your wolf off." He said it without malice, curious. "I have never smelled so much of it on one person."

I pulled my hand out from under his and went back to work. "You talk too much for a man who nearly died."

"I am trying to stay awake. You are the most interesting thing on this mountain."

The clouds slid off the moon and the cairn stones went silver. When I finished the bandage and sat back on my heels, he caught my chin between two fingers. His touch was gentle. I could have pulled away. I did not.

"You are the Luna," he said. "Elif."

"You know my name."

"Everyone knows your name." His thumb brushed the corner of my mouth. "I am Cemal. I have been walking toward this mountain for six weeks, and now I know why."

"Let go of me."

"No."

The word sat between us. His eyes were dark in the moonlight and his breath was shallow and I could smell the lie in him still, a small persistent wrongness under the blood and the woodsmoke. I knew what I was doing. That is the part I have never been able to explain, not to Maren, not to myself. I knew, and I leaned in anyway, and his mouth found mine.

He tasted of copper and rain. His hand slid from my chin to the back of my neck and pulled me closer, and I went, my knees against his thighs, my hands in his wet black hair. The bandage pressed against my palm and he made a sound into my mouth, pain and want tangled together, and I did not stop. His other hand found the small of my back and gathered the wool of my dress. The cairn stones were cold against my side where he turned me, and then his mouth was on my throat and my wolf howled again, not sound, not shape, only joy, and I bit my lip to keep from making a noise that would carry down the ridge.

I had spent five years in the company of my own silence. That night I learned what my body had been waiting for.

Afterward the moon had moved and the blood on the moss had gone dark, and he lay with his head against my shoulder, breathing slow. My heart was still racing. My hands were not steady. I could not make them stop shaking.

"Stay the night somewhere warm," I said. "There is a shed behind the smokehouse. No one goes there before dawn."

"And after dawn?"

"After dawn I decide what to do with you."

He lifted his head and looked at me, and in the pale light his face was open and tired and almost honest. "Elif. The bond you felt, I felt it first, weeks ago, on the road. I thought it was a story the old wolves tell children. Then I crossed your cairn and there you were." He touched my wrist, lightly, and the wolf inside me turned toward him like a flower toward the sun. "I came here for you. Whatever you decide at dawn, remember that I came here for you."

I walked down the mountain alone. The pines smelled of him. The hollow place behind my ribs was full and roaring.

At the bottom of the ridge, where the path turned toward the pack house, I stopped so fast that my boots slid on the wet needles. There was a mark pressed into the mud at the path's edge, fresh, the print of a shod boot. The Kırkkaya wolves went barefoot on the mountain. We always had.

It pointed toward the cairn, and it was not mine.
